Glitch (EP) Out Now
Excited for this! Both songs are co-writes with Tim Lefebvre, who produced these and the coming album in September. Glitch is a snapshot into what we get into on stage.
Tim’s ring mod affected bass is the centerpiece, with Jason and I having a bolero-esque melody on A sections. Bridge goes to a chant-like melody on saxes with psychedelic flute coloring the edges.
Pony Up started with Tim's demo, which had a Meshuga-like energy. Added a 4 chord of sorts, and then we jammed on it, again at soundcheck, and Tim went into this sick atonal ½ time B section idea. Luckily it was recorded…after transcribing it, I added the sax multiphonics as a melody element.
The ending section felt like a release from the overall intensity of the song. Was imagining a scene change moment to end things on a more hopeful note. The C, G, D guitar forward part that precedes the melody recap was Tim’s addition. I love it and dig that it has shades of Bowie’s “Earthling.”
Now Listening
Right now my creative process is about being in the moment, playing. Not practicing, as I’ve been on stage and in rehearsals mostly the past week and a half. Sometimes there’s a real freedom in my mind when it’s just picking up the horn and playing when the opportunities to play are consistent. Feels like I can get more to humanity/focus/emotion right away.
Just finished a run that included a Blackstar Symphony show, a concert w/ Ishkero, and 3 nights w/ Maria Schnieder, so not much time/bandwith to listen, but did do a dive into Luke Vibert’s music the other day, along with Photek’s album “Modus Operandi.”
Also some Gil Evans: “Out Of The Cool” and “New Bottle Old Wine.”
Today it’s “The Köln Concert” by Keith Jarrett and Sigur Rós’ album “ÁTTA.”
